The Division Heartland Has Been Canceled, Ubisoft to Reinvest in XDefiant and Rainbow Six

Today, in the middle of its full-year financial report, Ubisoft announced that the free-to-play game Tom Clancy's The Division Heartland has been canceled. The publisher will reinvest in XDefiant and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six instead. Here's the full quote:

As part of Ubisoft’s efforts to streamline its operations and adapt to evolving market trends, there have been further reorganizations within the Global Publishing teams, both at the APAC region, which is now organized into three engagement hubs and at the central level. Additionally, in line with the increased selectivity of its investments, Ubisoft has decided to stop development on The Division Heartland and has redeployed resources to bigger opportunities such as XDefiant and Rainbow Six.

The Division Heartland was first announced in May 2021 alongside the mobile game (now known as Resurgence) and new content for The Division 2. Developed by Red Storm, it was set in the small Midwestern town of Silver Creek, a quiet hamlet ravaged by the so-called Dollar Flu and later occupied by various Division agents.

Players would have selected from a roster of playable characters and engaged in various PvE and PvP activities:

  • Massive PvEvP in Storm Operations - Fight together in 45-player PvEvP Storm Operations against a group of dangerous Rogue agents, an aggressive faction known as the Vultures, all while surviving a lethal virus.
  • Prep the Battlefield in PvE Excursion Operations - Complete PvE missions, gather gear, activate alerts, and prep the battlefield in Excursion Operations.
  • Progress and Adapt to Survive - Play as one of six agents and select between three classes each match, all with their own perks and skills.

In late 2023, the Taiwanese rating board was found to have rated the game, prompting speculation that The Division Heartland would soon be launched. However, Ubisoft decided to shut down operations. The
