Tensor G4 Running In The Pixel 9 Series Was Not Designed ‘To Beat Some Specific Benchmark,’ Says Google Executive, But Improve User Experience

Google treated every one of its Pixel 9 models fairly by treating each of them to the new and improved Tensor G4 this year. Unfortunately, just like previous chipset launches, benchmark leaks have revealed that the SoC continues to lag behind the competition, but it appears that this was done intentionally by the company, as implied by an executive. She mentions in the latest interview that the Tensor G4 was not designed for ground-breaking performance but to tackle specific use cases, including improving the overall experience. More details have been uncovered in the latest interview, so let us proceed.

One ‘pain point’ that was addressed with the Tensor G4 was opening apps; Google executive says that daily usage is smoother without exerting the battery

Even though Google marketed the Tensor G4 as the fastest and most efficient silicon launched by the technology giant, it is significantly slower than the competition. Thankfully, Soniya Jobanputra, a key member of Google’s Pixel product management team, spoke with Financial Express and clarified that the Tensor G4 was not designed to break any benchmarking records but to improve the overall user experience. She states the following regarding issues the SoC is tailored to tackle.

Another focus of Google’s Pixel team was improving AI performance on the Tensor G4, with Gemini Nano now upgraded for multimodal capabilities. When using the Pixel 9, users can experience up to three times on-device AI performance compared to the Pixel 8 Pro. During Google’s official event, it was mentioned that the Tensor G4 can process up to 45 tokens per second, which is the highest in the industry for a smartphone chipset. With this message, it is clear where Google is positioning its Pixel 9 series.

Oftentimes, we will witness that smartphones are equipped with the best-in-class hardware, but the user experience is below average because the software is not polished. In this area, Google appears to have taken the smarter route. However,
