Destiny 2 is Making a Big Change to How Power Works in The Final Shape

A lot of changes are coming to the Power system of Destiny 2 when The Final Shape expansion makes it debut on June 4. While Destiny 2's Fireteam Power feature was initially announced back in August during the Destiny 2 Showcase 2023, the developers are now announcing updated changes as to how the feature will allow its players more interaction with their friends in the upcoming expansion.

Power Levels in Destiny 2 are determined by the gear that players have equipped, with higher-level gear granting higher levels of Power. Power levels aren't actually cumulative, but rather, take into account the average score of the gear that a player has equipped. What givesDestiny 2 Fireteam Power its main appeal is that it will permit players to experience endgame content with friends even if their own Power Levels aren't high enough. It does this by providing a boost to players with lower Power Levels that place them just five points under the Power Leader, or the player in the fireteam who has the highest Power Level.

In a recent This Week In Destiny update, the developers have noted that they have overhauled the Power system for The Final Shape to make it easier for players to understand and to «Lower the barrier to entry for Destiny 2 story content.» The biggest change to this system walks back a previous decision to limit the Power levels that Legacy Gear items can reach. In other words, the caps that Bungie had previously put in place to limit the Power that can be assigned to older gear items will be removed in The Final Shape, which the developers hope will allow older players who have left Destiny 2 behind to return to the game and enjoy all the expansion content has to offer.

Dismantling gear in Destiny 2 is one way to acquire more materials, and Bungie has acknowledged that a lot of players may have already dismantled their older Power-capped gear items due to the developers' previous decision to limit their Power. While there is no current method for recovering those
