Chibi-Robo’s director wants Nintendo to bring the series back

The director of Chibi-Robo has told VGC he would like to see Nintendo bring back the original game.

It was announced on Friday that a new studio called Tiny Wonder Studios, formed by Chibi-Robo developers, is working on a new game called KoROBO.

Now the game’s co-director Kenichi Ishi, who co-directed the original Chibi-Robo on GameCube in 2005, has told VGC he wouldn’t be against the return of the original series even though he’s no longer involved with it.

Ishi said that, because the four main Chibi-Robo games – one on GameCube, two on DS and one on 3DS – were helmed by different directors, the series doesn’t really feel like his ‘baby’ anyway.

“Just speaking from my own point of view, the GameCube game was the game I was director on, then when it went to the second and third games, Moriyama-san was the director, then for the fourth one it was Ito-san,” he explained through an interpreter.

“So the series itself has travelled between different people’s hands, with different people working on it.

“So I don’t really feel connected to it in a way that I don’t want anyone to do anything to this game. I would be happy to see that it’s still living, and it hasn’t gone away forever in that sense.”

Announced at BitSummit on Friday, koROBO tells the story of a small robot and their 10-year old owner, Tom.

Starting in Tom’s room, koROBO eventually gets to explore the rest of their family’s apartment in ‘Brocklyn, New Yock’.

“As koROBO, [players] will help out the family, perform tasks around the home, meet the many denizens that inhabit the apartment building, and defend Tom and those he loves from a mysterious enemy… that can travel through space-time,” the studio says.

Ishi will be joined for koROBO by Hiroshi Moriyama (the other co-director of Chibi-Robo), Keita Eto (co-director of Chibi-Robo Zip Lash), Hirofumi Taniguchi (the composer for Chibi-Robo) and ‘Hikarin’ (a character designer on Chibi-Robo).

VGC’s full interview with koROBO developer Tiny Wonder Studios will be published
