Saber Interactive CEO says its Star Wars: KoTOR remake is still ‘alive and well’

The CEO of Saber Interactive has confirmed that its remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still in active development.

In an interview with IGN, Matthew Karch was asked to definitively confirm that Saber was still working on the game following its split from Embracer Group last month.

“It’s clear and it’s obivous that we’re working on this,” Karch replied. “It’s been in the press numerous times.

“What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.”

Despite Karch’s suggestion that the KoTOR remake’s status is “obvious”, there have been questions around the game’s development for some time.

Billed as a collaboration between developer Aspyr and production partners Lucasfilm Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, the remake was announced as a timed PS5 console exclusive during a PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021.

It has beset by problems over the past few years, however, statring with reports that Aspyr had stopped working on it. Embracer had previously confirmed that Saber Interactive was working on the game, with Bloomberg claiming it had taken over entirely.

Some eventually believed the game may have been abandoned, but in November journalist Jason Schreier wrote that he believed it was still in development to an extent.

When Embracer sold Saber last month, it was reported that the KoTOR remake was “going with Saber”, according to Schreier.

However, when announcing the deal, Embracer saidit retained “two joint projects with the buyer”, including “a previously announced AAA game based on a major license”, which implies that the KoTOR remake will remain a jointly held asset between Embracer and Saber.
