Puget Systems Posts 2023 CPU Market Trend: Intel Leads In Client Desktop, AMD Dominates The Workstation Segment

Puget Systems has released its CPU market trend report for 2023 showing Intel leading the desktop mainstream space while AMD remains the workstation king.

AMD Manages To Maintain Dominance In The Workstation Segment, Intel Still In The Lead On Client CPUs

Puget Systems is a custom computer business that primarily specializes in workstation systems. The company has released its annual Hardware Trends Survey, which fortunately focuses on client and workstation sales. Here, we will delve into processors specifically since this segment tends to have a more diverse consumer audience.

Speaking of the client segment first, Puget System has disclosed that with the debut of Intel's 12th Gen Alder Lake lineup, the firm witnessed a massive market return and has now upheld this trend, even with current-gen processors. The firm says that the use of Intel CPUs was in more than 80% of their orders, which shows the impact Team Blue has had on client consumers in modern days. This could change when we see the debut of AMD's Zen 5 CPUs, but Intel is in the lead for now.

AMD on the other hand was focused on more premium desktop SKUs on the AM5 platform & only recently expanded it in the sub-$200 US category while simultaneously releasing new AM4 budget offerings.

However, on the workstation side of things, AMD has strangled Intel to the very bottom. AMD's Threadripper CPUs have dominated this segment for the past two to three years, giving Intel no space, especially after the debut of the 5000 series. With the Threadripper 7000 lineup, Team Red also gained current-gen superiority, and Intel's Xeon Scalable SKUs weren't much visible in the markets. AMD managed to gain a whopping 95% market share in the orders received by Puget Systems. Still, the share did see a minor decline going into the end of 2023, mainly due to the HPC capabilities found in the Intel ecosystem.
