Pokemon Fan Successfully Gets 1997 Mew All the Way to Scarlet and Violet

A Pokemon player has successfully managed to transfer the rare Mew from Space World 1997 into the modern-day Pokemon Scarlet and Violet games. The Pokemonuniverse contains many rare and legendary creatures, and the powerful Psychic feline Mew may very well be one of the most elusive of all. Despite playing a major role in the lore of the original Pokemon Red and Blue games, Mew could not be encountered or captured in the base game without glitches or datamining. This would be the case for every mainline Pokemon game until Generation 4’s Diamond and Pearl, which allowed players to import it from the Wii My Pokemon Ranch spin-off.

Before then, the only legitimate way for Pokemon trainers to add Mew to their collections was to either obtain it from a special Nintendo event or trade for it with someone who did. The first physical event offering Mew was Space World 1997 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan on November 21–24. In addition to playable demos of the then-upcoming Pokemon Gold and Silver games, Nintendo offered 100,000 eventgoers the chance to transfer Mew to their game cartridges from a special machine.

Nearly 27 years after the Space World 1997 Mews were first handed out, a Reddit user by the handle of SwimJumpy8678 has successfully imported one into Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. They shared a YouTube video from Porygon's Pokedex explaining the process, which was once thought to be impossible until another player discovered a Pokemon Blue cartridge with the rare Mew. To transfer the Mew from the old game to Pokemon Home, one requires a Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color link cable, a Japanese copy of Pokemon Blue, a card dumper, a Flash card, and all of the games and hardware needed to transfer from Generation 3 to Generation 7.
