PlayStation is working on a new platform for free-to-play mobile games

Sony is working on a new platform focused on free-to-play mobile games.

As spotted by TweakTown, the company has posted a new job listing for a ‘Mobile Platform Architect’.

According the listing, the role – which will come under the PlayStation Studios Mobile department – will involve hiring ” an experienced software engineer to design PlayStation’s platform for developing, publishing, and operating free-to-play mobile games”.

It adds: “An individual in this role will spearhead the design and implementation of this platform, work in partnership with internal teams to connect mobile games to PlayStation services, and ensure that all mobile games meet PlayStation’s quality standards.”

The successful applicant, who should have more than eight years of professional experience in the mobile games industry, will “design the system architecture and backend services for the mobile games platform” and “establish pipelines and processes to facilitate the delivery of high-quality software”, among other roles.

Over the past few years, Sony has been building a team of experienced mobile talent, hiring people from Apple, Kabam, Meta, Tencent, Super Evil Megacorp, Samsung, Niantic, Zynga, Riot and more.

However, last year its mobile divisionlost two top executives weeks apart – Michail Katkoff (who worked at Rovio and Zynga) and Nicola Sebastini (who previously led Apple Arcade).

Xbox has also been working on its own mobile games division, and plans to launch a web-based mobile game store in July in an attempt to compete with Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store.

The store will launch with Microsoft’s own games and additional content for said games, and will eventually be open to third-party publishers too.
