Microsoft has revealed the first wave of Xbox Game Pass titles coming to the subscription service this August. While we already knew about Creatures of Ava and Mafia: Definitive Edition’s impending additions to Xbox Game Pass, we also learned that another Activision Blizzard game is coming: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
EA and Respawn Entertainment have revealed that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will come out on September 17. That means players who only own last-gen consoles will be able to try out this excellent action-adventure game that was previously exclusive to PC and current-gen consoles.
Descenders, an indie sports game from RageSquid and No More Robots, is quietly one of the best games on Xbox Game Pass thanks to its engaging bike-riding gameplay and endlessly playable, procedurally generated levels. Now, it’s getting a sequel called Descenders Next that trades in biking for snowboarding and mountainboarding.
Konami is best known for franchises like Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Bomberman, and Contra, but it has drawn quite a bit of ire for how it has treated them over the past decade. That said, the storied Japanese game developer and publisher has been on a bit of a rebound recently. It’s reviving its older franchises with collections and brand new games like Contra: Operation Galuga and Super Bomberman R 2 and publishing some quality indie-level games like Skelattack and Super Crazy Rhythm Castle. Cygni: All Guns Blazing finds the middle ground between those two things and is Konami’s best game in years because of that.
When I played Volgarr the Viking 2 at Guerrilla Collective 2024, I couldn’t beat its first level. I was adamant about doing better once I had the full game on my Nintendo Switch. As I’d learn when I finally got my hands on it, Crazy Viking Studios and Digital Eclipse had players like me in mind all along when it approached difficulty design. Volgarr the Viking 2 gives players more than enough tools to get better at the game over time, letting me overcome my initial hurdle with a little time and practice.
While August has just begun, we need to wait a bit longer until new games hit each tier of PlayStation Plus, Sony’s video game subscription service. Despite that, it’s actually a good time to catch up on some of the other games that recently joined the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra Game Catalog. Last month’s lineup for the service was particularly great as well, so from PSP games to exhilarating sports games, there are some recently added titles to check out. Volgarr the Viking 2 is a retro platformer inspired by NES classics likeGhosts’ n Goblins and Rastan, so naturally it’s a challenge. Volgarr dies in just two hits, and checkpoints are spread out pretty far in levels. If handled poorly, it could drive someone who isn’t used to the unforgiving nature of old games to tear their beard out. Developers Crazy Viking Studios and Digital Eclipse recognized that challenge when creating its surprise sequel. An approachable solution was born: If players use enough continues, Volgarr becomes a zombie and won’t die from taking damage anymore. It’s a new bit of innovation in a very old game genre.
