The video game industry received some fantastic news on Sunday night. Tango Gameworks — developers of games like Hi-Fi Rush, The Evil Within, and Ghostwire: Tokyo — will not be shut down by Microsoft after all.

The video game industry is in a period of contraction. Companies like Bungie are canceling games and laying off developers so they can home in and focus on one or two big titles. Why invest in smaller, riskier projects when making larger games in well-known franchises will yield greater returns? Capcom, on the other hand, is committed to doing both.
August looks like it will be a somewhat quieter month for Xbox Game Pass after a July filled with heavy hitters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, The Case of the Golden Idol, Neon White, and Dungeons of Hinterberg. As such, this is a month where it’s worth looking toward what games are leaving the service rather than which ones are coming in. On August 15, a few great games will leave Xbox Game Pass after a year or more on Microsoft’s gaming subscription service. That should inform what you decide to play this weekend, as you’ll need to buy these three games outright if you want to play them after August 15.
There has been a lot of talk this year about Xbox console exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush, As Dusk Falls, and Sea of Thieves going multiplatform and being readily available on the PlayStation 5 as a result. For once, we’re seeing that process work the other way around.
It’s the first full week of the month, so three new games have just been made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers across all three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. These games aren’t being tossed into the Extra and Premium game catalog indefinitely. Instead, PS Plus subscribers can redeem these games between now and September 2, and they will remain in your game library as long as you have an active PS Plus subscription. It’s a solid batch of games too, so if you’re looking for something to play this weekend, I’d definitely recommend checking out any of these three games.

While a lot of the hubbub around day-one Xbox Game Pass games centers around first-party titles (or lack thereof), Microsoft’s subscription service has been surprisingly consistent when it comes to snagging quality indie and AA games for the service the day they release. These are often some of the best, most creative games on the entire service, whether that’s because they experiment with gameplay mechanics or just tell a really good story.
