Tribes 3: Rivals got everyone excited with an excellent Steam Next Fest demo this February that suggested, maybe this time, the revival would stick. The game launched into early access on March 12, 2024, promising a «rebirth» of the beloved first-person sport-slash-shooter with a simple business model: $20 upfront price, and no microtransactions.
Paul Allen was the co-founder of Microsoft, a computing pioneer, and one of the world's great philanthropists. Allen died in 2018, at the age of 65, and at the time his co-founder Bill Gates paid tribute to «a brilliant technologist and philanthropist who wanted to accomplish great things, and did.»

One of the key figures in early FPS history and by far the most infamous and outspoken, Romero's brand of hirsute grungy swagger worked for a very simple reason: the games he designed and promoted were brilliant (until they weren't).
The original isometric Fallout games were developed by Black Isle Studios in the 1990s, after which the series went on a longer-than-expected hiatus. Publisher Interplay was not having a good time of it in the early 2000s, and one of the projects causing it trouble was the next mainline Fallout game: codenamed Project Van Buren, but for all intents and purposes, Fallout 3.
Boundary is a multiplayer space shooter where the pitch is simple: PvP in zero-G. The game was announced in 2019 by developer Surgical Scalpels, and would eventually launch in early access in April 2023, at which time PC Gamer's Tyler Wilde found it a weirdly compelling take on the competitive FPS: «Space is really not the ideal location for anything humans do, nevermind tactical infantry battles, but it is quite a lot of fun.»
Earlier this year Microsoft announced the closure of four major studios on the same day, among which number was the Tokyo-based developer Tango Gameworks. Founded in 2010 by industry legend Shinji Mikami, best-known for creating Resident Evil, the studio developed the (excellent) Evil Within games as part of an eclectic output, with its most recent release the well-received rhythm beat-em-up Hi-Fi Rush.

While the original will forever hold a place in my heart, SimCity 2000 is one of those sequels that was simply meant to be. It was one of those sequels that doubled-down on everything brilliant about the first game, with a stunning visual makeover that saw the top-down 2D look become a gorgeous isometric urban panorama. It's more complex, much more can go wrong, and I'm not sure Maxis or EA ever made a subsequent SimCity that improved on it.
