Ubisoft has cancelled The Division Heartland.
Today, in the middle of its full-year financial report, Ubisoft announced that the free-to-play game Tom Clancy's The Division Heartland has been canceled. The publisher will reinvest in XDefiant and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six instead. Here's the full quote:
Just over three years ago, Ubisoft announced The Division Heartland, a free-to-play entry in its survival-action shooter series. At the time, it suggested that Heartland would arrive later in 2021 or in 2022, but that never happened. In fact, Heartland isn't coming out at all.
Three years after announcing it as «an all-new perspective» on its long-running Division series, Ubisoft has quietly pulled the plug on The Division: Heartland, saying it has decided to focus its efforts on other games instead.
Ubisoft announced Wednesday that it would be canceling its in-development,free-to-play third-person shooter Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, citing a recalibration of its resources. Fortnite is the highest-grossing game in the first quarter of 2024, according to a report published by Newzoo. The year 2024 for the games industry has been marked by events such as layoffs, Gearbox Software's acquisition by Take-Two Interactive, and the farewell to Nintendo 3DS and Wii U online services. Meanwhile, new releases like Palworld and Helldivers 2 hit the shelves, sharing space with popular releases like Fortnite and Valorant.

XDefiant, Ubisoft's Call of Duty rival, has finally revealed its new release date of May 21. When it was first revealed in 2021, XDefiant was met with confusion and criticism from Ubisoft fans. Since then, after several playtest periods and a beta last summer, sentiment surrounding the FPS improved, as it featured sound gunplay and engaging combat, though it ultimately wasn't as polished as Call of Duty. Despite the positive response, the title was hit with several more delays, one in October and another this past March, leaving the fate of the game up in the air.
