And you thought the Borderlands movie's $90m flop was harsh: Gearbox is getting eviscerated for botching the first Risk of Rain 2 DLC it's made after buying the IP

The second Risk of Rain 2 DLC, Seekers of the Storm, is the first major update to come to the legendary roguelike since Borderlands studio Gearbox acquired the IP in November 2022. Everything looked promising: fresh stages, new and returning characters, more items, and a development team that seemed optimistic about the series' comeback after Gearbox canceled a mobile game spinoff which it spun up right after acquiring the series.

The "largest ever" DDOS attack was reportedly the "carpet bombing" of a Minecraft server weathering 3.15 billion packets per second from Russia and 17 other countries

DDOS mitigation company Global Secure Layer claims to have fielded the largest DDOS attack in recorded history, in terms of packets per second, which reportedly saw one unfortunate "Minecraft gaming customer" bombarded with a buckling 3.15 billion PPS from a botnet said to be concentrated in Russia, but with traffic sources also spanning 17 other countries. For clarity, this doesn't mean people from these countries were involved, it just means attacks originated from sources in these locations.

As World of Warcraft: The War Within paid early access ends, Blizzard makes leveling slower in the MMO's new expansion, and the community's not loving the timing

World of Warcraft: The War Within is well and truly out now, but it's technically been playable since August 22 via the pricier edition that came with early access. As the rest of the MMO's community piled into an expansion that many players, including our friends at PC Gamer, really seem to like, Blizzard announced a change to the early game experience that would make the new level grind a bit slower, and while you can reasonably argue that the change is a healthy one, the post-early access timing of it hasn't gone down swimmingly.

Amazon Prime gives out 3 free Lord of the Rings games to celebrate The Rings of Power season 2, but you might not be able to play one of them

Amazon Prime subscribers can claim up to three free Lord of the Rings games in a new Prime Gaming offer hyping up The Rings of Power season 2. All of them are pretty good, but I suspect many people won't be able or eager to play one of them.

Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed vet says sequels rule because that's when devs "can make the game they really wanted to make the first time"

On the long list of ways that some gamers unwittingly invoke the monkey's paw, there are few chants more insidious than this: "Don't reuse assets." The idea that all games should start from scratch, reinventing a perfectly good wheel or putting out one fire just to light another one right next to it, will at best lead to a whole lot of wasted time and money, and at worst a lot of bloated or even dead games. More to the point, as Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed veteran John Ebenger reckons, directly building on established tech can lead to sequels that end up better in every conceivable way.

Nintendo isn't big on generative AI, and with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was careful with automated art – "The game could potentially end up losing something valuable"

Some elements of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's art and design processes were automated for efficiency, but Nintendo was careful about offloading too much to computers out of fear of "losing something valuable" to the gameplay experience.

Dying Light dev says we're all too obsessed with "the number of hours a game can offer" and shorter games like the 18+ hour Dying Light: The Beast feel like "the future"

Dying Light: The Beast is the latest DLC-turned-game to bridge the gap between big-ol' AAA releases and bite-sized, sometimes hour-long experiences, and franchise director Tymon Smektała of developer Techland reckons AA experiences like it might be "the future of games."
