Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down after 1 year

Warner Bros. Games has confirmed plans to shut down Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.

The mobile title is being delisted from the App Store and Google Play today, while in-game transactions will be disabled next month and the game will close in October, just shy of a year since its release.

The free to download game was announced in October 2022 to coincide with the franchise’s 30th anniversary and was released one year later.

Developed by NetherRealm Studios, Onslaught is “a strategic team-based collection RPG”, according to chief creative officer and series co-creator Ed Boon.

It features a story centred on fallen Elder God Shinnok, who’s seeking to regain his power by collecting relics from across the realms. Players are tasked with coming to Raiden’s aid and building a team of fighters to foil Shinnok’s plans.

“Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will shut down on 10/21/24,” reads a message posted on the game’s X account. “The game will be removed from the App Store and Google Play on 7/22/24, with in-game purchases disabled on 8/23/24.

“Players can enjoy the game until 10/21/24. It has been an honor creating this game for our Kommunity.”

Mortal Kombat 1’s latest fighter, Takeda Takahashi, will join the game on July 23 for Kombat Pack owners, ahead of the DLC’s general release on July 30.

Other upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 DLC characters could include the T-1000, Conan the Barbarian, Ghostface, Cyrax, Sektor and Noob Saibot, according to a recent datamine.
