Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is currently the second-highest scoring Final Fantasy on Metacritic

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth currently has the second-highest Metacritic score of any game in the entire Final Fantasy series.

As noted on X by games industry commentator Benji-Sales, the game’s current Metacritic score of 93 makes it second only to Final Fantasy 9 on the PlayStation, which currently has a score of 94.

It should be noted that judging the series by past titles’ Metacritic scores isn’t an exact science, since Metacritic was founded in 2001 and as such older games have either far fewer reviews making up their average, or simply aren’t listed at all.

That said, based purely on Metacritic scores, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth currently sits ahead of the original PS1 Final Fantasy 7, the GBA version of Final Fantasy 6, and PS2 titles Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy 12, all four of which have Metacritic scores of 92.

Final Fantasy 14 expansions Endwalker and Shadowbringers have scores of 92 and 90 respectively, while the only other game in the series rated 90 or over is Final Fantasy 8, with a score of 90.

Compared to more recent titles, the game’s predecessor Final Fantasy 7 Remake got a Metacritic score of 87, while its Intergrade upgrade was scored 89.

In terms of main series entries, Final Fantasy 15 was scored 81, while Final Fantasy 16 got an 87.

VGC’sFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth review calls the game “an utterly massive RPG pushed to its limit”.

“Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is an excellent RPG with some of the best characters in the gaming canon,” we wrote.

“While some open-world content skirts the edges, and the game’s main narrative is left somewhat deflated, the time spent with Aerith, Tifa, and the gang makes this a hugely enjoyable road trip you’ll be playing for hundreds of hours.”
