Doom: The Dark Ages Announcement Reportedly Near, Will Have “Medieval-Inspired World”

There have been a number of clues recently that the announcement of the next entry in the legendary Doom series may be forthcoming, and now, a fresh set of rumors have potentially revealed more about what we can expect. According to dependable insider Tom Henderson, the next big entry in id Software’s franchise is indeed coming soon and will be known as Doom: The Dark Ages.

Per Henderson, Doom: The Dark Ages has been in development for roughly four years, which makes sense, as Doom Eternal came out in 2020. The game was developed under the codename “Year Zero,” and The Dark Ages subtitle is quite literal, as the game is said to feature a “medieval inspired Doom world.” Beyond that, we don’t know all that much – will the Doomslayer be doing some time traveling? Or, given the Year Zero codename, could this be a prequel, showing an earlier Doomslayer taking on demons in a historical setting? Regardless, it sounds like those who found 2016’s Doom and Doom Eternal perhaps a little samey are in for something a bit different.

Of course, take this with a grain of salt for now, but Henderson rarely misses, and again, multiple reliable sources are pointing toward a Doom reveal at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase in June. Xbox has been facing quite a bit of blowback from once-loyal fans, as Xbox Series X/S sales flatline, they bring former exclusives to other platforms, and close studios responsible for acclaimed games like Hi-Fi Rush and Prey. The Xbox Showcase will provide a first look at the next Call of Duty, and possibly the next Gears title, so adding Doom to that lineup really would make it an exciting show for shooter fans.

The Xbox Games Showcase will be streamed on June 9. What do you think? Excited to go medieval on some demons? Or does the concept sound a bit strange?
