Black Myth: Wukong Delay Has Nothing to Do With Xbox Limitations, Says Microsoft

Black Myth: Wukong was the success story of August in the games industry; that much is certain. The debut title from Chinese developer Game Science sold 10 million copies in three days and crushed Cyberpunk 2077's record for the highest player concurrency on Steam registered by a single player game. CD PROJEKT's game reached 1.05 million concurrent players at its height, while Black Myth: Wukong, no doubt thanks to the massive Chinese community, has peaked at 2.41 million players, ranking second in the all-time peak concurrency Steam chart only behind PUBG: Battlegrounds.

The game was launched on PC and PlayStation 5, but not Xbox. At Summer Game Fest 2024, when Game Science opened pre-orders, the developer also announced a delay for the Xbox Series S|X version. Early on, there were whispers of a potential timed console exclusivity deal signed by Sony, although Microsoft did not comment on that rumor. However, last week, several insiders reported that the real reason was a technical one, specifically a memory leak issue.

Forbes was able to get a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson, who denied there were any such issues that they were aware of.

As we have said before, we’re excited for the launch of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We'd prefer not to comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders but we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us.

The situation remains confusing, to say the least. Is there a soft exclusivity deal for a set period of time? It's hard to say at this point. However, Black Myth: Wukong still has no release window for Xbox. Meanwhile, a rumor from earlier this week hints there could be two DLCs for the game before the inevitable sequel goes into production.
