Black Myth: Wukong delay ‘not due to platform limitations raised to Xbox’

Microsoft has provided an update on Black Myth: Wukong’s delayed release for Xbox Series X/S.

Chinese developer and publisher Game Science announced in June that the Xbox version of the action RPG had been pushed back due to internal quality concerns.

It had originally been expected to launch alongside the PS5 and PC versions on August 20, 2024.

“As we have said before, we’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X/S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Forbes on Tuesday.

“We’d prefer not to comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders but we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us.”

There’s been plenty of speculation regarding the game’s delayed Xbox release, with some questioning whether it may be related to difficulties in porting it to Series S, an issue that has affected some games in the past, including Baldur’s Gate 3.

Announcing the delay in June, Game Science said: “We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards, so it won’t release simultaneously with the other platforms.

“We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.”

It was later claimed that the game had been delayed due to a memory leak issue that was causing it to fail bug detection tests.

However, Forbes subsequently reported that the delay was due to Sony striking an undisclosed console exclusivity deal for the game.

Black Myth: Wukong has been a major hit, selling 10 million copies across all platforms in just three days, according to Game Science.
