Yoko Taro Is Working on a Game That Might or Might Not Be NieR

Visionary game director and writer Yoko Taro is working on a game with Yosuke Saito and composer Keiichi Okabe, as revealed in the latest issue of the Japanese magazine Famitsu (via Gematsu).

Saito teased that the project might or might not be set in the NieR series:

I’ve been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko and Okabe for some time now. I’ll have something a bit more put-together to say in the not-too-distant future, so please stay tuned. It might be NieR, it might not be NieR. That’s about all I can say for now.

Despite the misdirection, there seems to be a solid chance that the game belongs to that franchise. Saito has worked as a producer on the original NieR, NieR: Automata, and NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.... and even as an executive producer on the mobile game NieR Re[in] Carnation. The same can be said for composer Keiichi Okabe.

As for Yoko Taro, following the unexpected success of NieR: Automata (the game has sold over eight million units in seven years), he worked as creative director on SINoALICE, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...., NieR Re[in] Carnation, and on the Voice of Cards games.

He also wrote the scenario for the YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse crossover with Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers and wrote 2023's Japanese animated TV series NieR: Automata Ver1.1a.

What would you like to see from Yoko Taro next? A proper sequel to Automata or something else entirely? Let us know in the comments.
