Lenovo has taken the AI PC & "2-in-1" narrative to a whole new level with its latest ThinkBook Plus Hybrid, which fuses Intel Meteor Lake & Qualcomm Snapdragon CPUs together for Windows and Android mode operation.
Qualcomm was previously rumored to be testing out the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 at various clock speeds, with an early leak showing that the SoC crossed 10,000 points in Geekbench 6, beating the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 by a whopping 46 percent difference. Now, the chipset’s reference redesign Geekbench 6 results have leaked, giving us a clearer picture of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s single-core and multi-core capabilities and though the scores are lower than what was previously obtained, it is still faster than current-generation chips like the A17 Pro.

Let's begin with a brief recap of the current state of play at Intel. For starters, despite bold promises to regain technology leadership, it remains miles behind TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited) in chip manufacturing and indeed is increasingly relying on TSMC to manufacture its latest and future CPUs, such as Meteor lake, Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake.
MediaTek is going all out with its flagship smartphone chipset release as the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor manufacturer will reportedly introduce its Dimensity 9400 in October. Like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the upcoming SoC is said to be mass produced on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, bringing in a wave of performance and efficiency improvements. MediaTek’s CEO, Rick Tsai, has expressed confidence in the upcoming silicon and believes that the Dimensity 9400’s release will allow the company to experience a 50 percent increase in annual revenue.
The Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus have made quite the statement ever since Qualcomm officially announced both chipsets in April this year. After all, the company finally has worthy competitors in the ARM notebook space that can take on Apple’s M-series, but there is still one obstacle that the San Diego firm has yet to scale that could become the ‘make or break’ factor for the company to cement its position in this market and that is pricing. During Qualcomm’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Christiano Amon announced that in 2025, customers can purchase Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite products for $700.
The Galaxy Tab S10+ and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra will reportedly enter mass production in August, with Samsung expected to use MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300+ for the first time in its flagship tablet family. As Qualcomm continues to raise its chipset prices, the Korean giant has to seek alternatives to reduce its component cost or continue bearing reduced profit margins on each sale. As it so happens, one report states that by teaming up with MediaTek, Samsung will gain increased bargaining power over Qualcomm, maybe to the extent that the latter provides its Snapdragon shipments at a lower price.
Qualcomm will leverage TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which only means that we should bear witness to the chipset’s incredible power-efficiency attributes. Then again, it is also possible that the San Diego has optimized the SoC to the extent that the Adreno 750 GPU delivers incredible ‘performance per watt’ compared to MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300. According to new internal testing data, the graphics side of the silicon could exhibit jaw-dropping power consumption, but the same cannot be said about the CPU.
