Sometimes I still don't quite believe it. After years, decades, of Atlus stubbornly refusing to put a bunch of Persona games on anything but a PlayStation, I now have 3, 4 and 5—in their expanded-edition forms—plus a 3 remake in my Steam library. What a time to be alive.
New Atlus JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio is fast approaching, and it seems it's already been given a seal of approval from Nier creator Yoko Taro, who claims that the game is "so stylish I almost wet myself." That's, uh, promising.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a game that has been in the works for a very long time. Announced back in 2016 as Project Re: Fantasy, the first game by Studio Zero, a new ATLUS internal development studio headed by Persona 3, 4, and 5 director Katsura Hasino, the game only resurfaced last year with a trailer that provided the first look at the project deeply rooted in traditional fantasy aesthetics. Even with a different setting, however, the Persona series DNA is still quite prevalent in Metaphor: ReFantazio, but that is not a bad thing at all, as I feel the game will be the first real step forward for the formula in a very long time.
One of the games I'm most looking forward to right now in 2025 is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a unique-looking new dark fantasy RPG being created by Sandfall Interactive. This is not just because it offers a gameplay experience close to that of a classic Final Fantasy or, in combat, a Persona game, of which I am a big fan, nor that the game sports a very distinctive twisted Belle Époque aesthetic. But also because it’s using Unreal Engine 5, and that means its graphics look fantastic, with notably subtle lighting effects and incredibly detailed textures. After watching a recent hands-off demo of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which in my opinion looks like one of the most interesting new RPGs incoming in 2025, I was particularly taken by what I perceived to be the game's indebtedness to the great turn-based RPG series, Persona, and specifically its latest and greatest release, Persona 5 Royal.

When Persona 3 Reload was announced, fans were both excited and anxious. Since the original Persona 3’s release in 2006, the RPG has received two iterations in the form of Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable, both of which had separate exclusive content that wasn’t available in the other. The former had a playable epilogue called The Answer, while the latter added a female protagonist.
Originally a spinoff series from the Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona has arguably become the more popular and known name among gamers. This series set itself apart by combining the monster-catching elements of the best Pokémon games with a deep and satisfying turn-based combat system. But the real kicker is the engrossing story and lovable characters you spend so many hours with. Now that we’re several years out from Persona 5, and even from the Royal edition, everyone is looking toward the next entry in one of the best JRPG series out there.
