Two months before this week's mass layoff of more than 200 staff at Bungie, «Payback,» the codename for a third-person perspective spinoff project set in the Destiny universe, was cancelled in order to prioritize development of the upcoming Marathon extraction shooter, according to a report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.
Following massive layoffs at Destiny 2 developer Bungie on Thursday, the company announced it would be changing course. According to a new report, that includes moving away from annual Destiny 2 expansions.
On the heels of seismic layoffs at Bungie and rumors of "the next Destiny" going back on the shelf as the studio reallocates development resources, Bloomberg reports that the very nature of Destiny 2 content is due for big changes with Bungie moving away from the annual release model that's kept the MMO afloat for years.
Following Bungie's layoff news, several insiders have provided updates on their projects, starting with Destiny 3. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, sources inside Bungie confirmed that Destiny 3 was actually never in development, despite earlier rumors to the contrary. The studio experimented with a spin-off project codenamed Payback for a while, but it was eventually shelved before the latest round of layoffs.
Late last month, Bungie laid off 220 employees in a decision which—to put it lightly—has shaken the company. The impacted developers have already expressed their frustration, anger, and disappointment on social media, especially in the wake of claims that CEO Pete Parsons spent$2.4 million on vintage vehicles over the past 2 years.
Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, two Bungie veterans known for their work on the Destiny series, are reportedly no longer working at the company, following the cancellation of the Payback project.
Bungie‘s recent swathe of job cuts were going to happen regardless of the success of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion, it’s claimed.
