The First Descendant To Update In-Game Icon, Weapon Designs After Accusations Of Too-Close Similarities

The First Descendant, a new free-to-play science-fiction looter-shooter, will update some of its icons and items after being accused of copying icon and item concepts from other games in the genre.

“We have taken the concerns raised seriously and decided to make adjustments to ensure that the imagery that may appear similarly clearly reflects the unique identity of our game,” Nexon said in a statement to Forbes writer Paul Tassi.

On June 7, Tassi dug into the parallels a bit, showing some of the Destiny 2 and First Descendant icons and items side-by-side. In some cases, the “parallels” are more clear, but some feel more “inspired”—though enough that it did draw some criticism. Others on social media pointed out the similarity of features such as UI to similar games in the oddly-specific yet tried-but-true “science fiction co-op dynamic-action looter shooter” genre such as Warframe

Nexon sent an update statement to Tassi on July 11, who shared it via Twitter, claiming the game was made with “deep affection and respect” for games like Destiny 2, which “served as inspiration.”
