First revealed at today's Xbox Games Showcase, id Software's follow-up to 2020's Doom Eternal will be a medieval flavored prequel called Doom: The Dark Ages. The brief trailer showed off Doom Guy's new look (complete with furry Game of Thrones cape!), some gameplay snippets, and a planned 2025 release window.
It's one of those grand weekends of lots of trailers, aka the 2024 summer gaming showcases, but I'm not watching those. I'm playing Empires of the Undergrowth, an absolutely excellent RTS about controlling an ant colony. I'm enjoying it so much, in fact, that the only one of the shows I'm going to break for is ours—The PC Gaming Show. Otherwise I'm only putting down the reins of my little ants for work. Like what I'm doing as I write this.
Four years after it was announced with a frosty teaser, Microsoft served up a brand-new State of Decay 3 trailer at today's Xbox Showcase—which, I'm sorry to say, did not include any indication as to when it might actually be out.
The prospect of playing as a ghoul has tempted players ever since we first set eyes on these decrepit, noseless creatures in the first Fallout. The series has had plenty of fantastic ghouls like Dean Domino and Raul Tejada in Fallout: New Vegas, John Hancok in Fallout 4, and the introduction of Chinese Remnant Spies in Fallout 3, who are ancient intelligence operatives that were marooned in the US when the bombs dropped.
We saw the first full trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 today at the Xbox showcase, and as previously teased, it's doing a ripped-from-the-headlines thriller set in the '90s. Watch it above.
One of the first things that interested me about Starfield before it launched was the revelation that there was a weird space cult who worshipped some kind of giant serpent. Why would astronauts believe in an eternal space snake? I couldn't wait to find out more about them.
Among the many little tweaks Obsidian made in Fallout: New Vegas was an overhaul of VATS. The crit bonus and damage reduction were revised downward, meaning that rather than being a bulletproof god who took 90% less damage like you did in Fallout 3, the New Vegas VATS enjoyer gained a mere 25% damage reduction while cinematics played out. What's more, those cinematics were less cinematic, with decreased use of those dramatic camera angles that let you linger on the gore.
Even after the loss of E3, the console manufacturers are soldiering on with traditional summer showcases direct to our home screens. With PlayStation wrapped and Nintendo yet to come, it's time to tune in for the Xbox Games Showcase to cap off the Summer Game Fest weekend.
