Sony Reverses Helldivers 2 PSN Account Linking Demands on PC

After several days of player outcry, pushback, and extensive review bombing, Sony has backed down from its demand that Helldivers 2 players be required to link a PSN account on PC if they wanted to continue playing.

Given that PSN isn’t even available in many countries, this would’ve shut many out from access entirely from one of the year’s biggest successes so far. While developer Arrowhead Games did not make the decision to demand PSN linking by June, saying it was in Sony’s hands, they still got caught in the criticism. This came as Arrowhead had been praised for how they worked with and were hands on with the community, as well as for their very well received game, of course.

After the first few days of community reactions to the account linking demands, things went a step further over the weekend when Helldivers 2 was delisted from Steam in the regions where PSN wasn’t available. That wasn’t going to halt the reactions, or the review bombings, of which there have been more than 100k negative reviews since the news came out.

Well, Sony seems to have decided to try to put out the raging fires by rescinding the demand to link accounts. In a statement shared today by Sony, they said:

«Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.

We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

Now, with a genuinely fun and incredibly successful game out there from Arrowhead, and access not going away, let’s see how the community responds to Sony’s U-Turn.
