PS Plus Subscribers Struggling With Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update

The long-awaited Fallout 4 next-gen update is out now, but PlayStation Plus subscribers are having trouble playing it. Fallout 4 fans have been waiting years for the popular open world RPG to get a native release on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and luckily, their wish has finally been granted. As of now, Fallout 4 players on all platforms can download the next-gen upgrade completely free of charge.

The Fallout 4 next-gen update adds Quality and Performance modes, a new Creation Club quest about the Enclave, new Halloween decorations for settlements, the Makeshift Weapon pack, and more. It also fixes some of the lingering bugs that have been plaguing the game. With the Fallout TV series fueling a resurgence for the franchise, many fans have been anxiously waiting for the next-gen update before jumping back into the game.

Unfortunately, the Fallout 4 next-gen update has proven problematic for PlayStation Plus subscribers. For the uninitiated, Fallout 4 was previously available through the PS Plus Collection, a now-defunct lineup of high-quality PS4 games that gave PS5 gamers an instant library of classics to play. Users that claimed Fallout 4 through PS Plus are reporting issues when trying to play the PS5 version of the game. When they go to play Fallout 4 on PS5, they are prompted to purchase that specific version of the game, though they retain access to the PS4 version. Bethesda has yet to clarify if this is on purpose or if PS Plus subscribers will get access to the PS5 upgrade.

PS Plus subscribers should brace themselves for the possibility that their subscription doesn't guarantee them access to the PS5 version of Fallout 4. There have been times in the past when this issue has cropped up, preventing those that «owned» a game through PS Plus from taking advantage of next-gen upgrades. For example, Final Fantasy 7 Remake's next-gen upgrade wasn't available to those that owned the game through PS Plus at first, though that functionality was eventually added.
