Pokemon Fan Reimagines Gengar Evolution Line in Rubberhose Cartoon Style

A Pokemon fan artist took to social media to post some artwork of the Ghost Pokemon Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar in the style of rubberhose cartoons from the 1930s, each having distinct features that are different from their normal styles. The Pokemon fan artist received compliments from other trainers for their efforts and creativity in making each Pokemon design stand out.

Known as the Shadow Pokemon, Gengar is among the first Ghost-type Pokemon introduced in the franchise. Debuting in Pokemon Red and Blue, Gengar's previous forms of Gastly and Haunter can be encountered at the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town, as the tower is considered the final resting place of many critters that fell in battle. Originally, Pokemon trainers who wanted to catch a Gengar had to trade a Haunter to evolve it, and then ask for it back. Since then, Gengar's acquisition methods have become easier, with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Tera Raid dens sometimes inhabited by the mischievous Gengar. With red eyes and an eerie grin, Gengar has long held its place as one of the best Ghost-type Pokemon in the series.

Though Gengar has been the subject of Pokemon fan art over the years, one fan chose a different direction with their work. A Reddit user named Leon_Re_art posted a screenshot of their 1930s-style interpretation of Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar on the r/Pokemon subreddit. Sticking with a monochrome palette and some added film grain effects, the OP's art starts with the Pokemon logo in bold letters reminiscent of Mickey Mouse cartoons of the era. The three Ghost-type Pokemon are featured front and center, with Gastly turned to the audience with a wriggly smile and white puffs of smoke surrounding its body. Gengar and Haunter are turned towards one another, with the former holding a Master Ball in its left hand and ready to attack its counterpart.

Gengar and Haunter have white gloves covering their four-fingered hands, and Haunter's eyes and mouth give the Gas Pokemon a hungry expression.
