PlayStation 5 Pro AI Upscaling Will Run on the GPU, as Viola APU Has No NPUs – Rumor

The PlayStation 5 Pro rumored AI upscaling feature will run on the console's GPU, as the APU powering the system has no neural processing units, according to a known leaker.

Commenting on X/Twitter, well-known AMD leaker Kepler commented on the claims that the console will support NVIDIA DLSS, which are false for obvious reasons, saying that the rumored AI upscaling tech the system should feature will run on the GPU. As the Viola APU that powers the system has no NPUs, the console should be able to support AI-enhanced upscaling via gfx11/12 WMMA intrinsics, which the leaker feels should be supported. Still, the leaker is dubious regarding AI-enhanced upscaling for the system even being a thing, as they see no point in Sony doing this by themselves without sharing research and development efforts with AMD.

The PlayStation 5 Pro AI upscaling, which was somewhat confirmed to exist by some leaked Marvel's Wolverine slides from Insomniac Games, is said to be one of the system's defining features, which will allow Sony to market it as a 120 FPS, 4K machine. Specs, however, have yet to be officially confirmed, although we may hear more about them shortly, as some third-party publishers have recently been briefed about them.
