Back in September of 2023, the European Union officially designated Apple a «gatekeeper» under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), stipulating that it must open its App Store on iOS in a number of ways, including adding the ability to «side-load» apps from the web rather than the store, to have other storefronts available, and more.
Five years ago, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford predicted that, "when we look back at Steam in five or 10 years, it may look like a dying store and other, competitive stores, will be the place to be," alluding primarily to the then-fresh Epic Games Store and its more generous developer revenue split. The Epic Games Store has finally launched on mobile platforms. Users will find it worldwide on Android and in Europe on iOS, allowing Fortnite to again be available to play on Apple's ecosystem. The date is no coincidence, as today marks the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale Chapter 5 Season 4: Absolute Doom, which is centered on Marvel heroes with Doctor Doom as the main villain.

Epic has been giving away games on the Epic Games Store since it launched at the end of 2018, enticing Steam users to install its launcher with freebies as big as Grand Theft Auto 5 and Civilization 6. More than 580 million free games were claimed just last year.
Fortnite is finally returning to iPhone today, four years after the game was pulled off of iOS – collateral in Epic Games' ongoing battle against manufacturers like Apple and Google over its ecosystems which, the publisher alleges, throttle competition. But what you really need to know is that the Epic Games Store is coming to mobile devices, albeit with some pretty large caveats.
Epic Games and its CEO, Tim Sweeney, have been at war with Apple for years now.
