Years before Baldur's Gate 3 blew everyone away, Larian's CEO nearly quit the industry over publisher pressure on the Divinity series

An avalanche of awards and even more money put Larian Studios on steady ground post-Baldur's Gate 3, but the company's lead and founder almost quit the industry after publishers interfered with the developer's previous output.

The canceled Baldur's Gate 3 DLC was playable when Larian canned it, and as if that weren't bad enough, director Swen Vincke says he knows we would've liked it.

Baldur's Gate 3 dev shares Larian boss Swen Vincke's response to the RPG's explosive launch: 'You know what this means? It means we get to do it again'

After Larian metaphorically, and quite possibly literally, wiped up the champagne and vacuumed the confetti after celebrating Baldur's Gate 3's long-awaited full release, studio boss Swen Vincke joined writing director Adam Smith around a monitor to watch the RPG's Steam numbers rocket into the stratosphere. Vincke's response to the game's surprising success was simple: "We get to do it again."

Baldur's Gate 3 dev explains in painstaking detail how and why players get to break the game: "The easy thing would be to block players ... but we don't like that at Larian"

In a newly posted presentation for Sofia Game Jam, Larian gameplay scripter Mihail Kostov outlined the work and thinking that goes into an RPG as freeform as Baldur's Gate 3, focusing on the "edge cases" that Larian had to account for even if an incredibly small percentage of players might run into them. We've heard similar stories from Larian before, but Hostov offered an interesting nitty-gritty approach.

Baldur's Gate 3 director Swen Vincke says that all the awards actually started to obstruct development: 'It is surprisingly draining on the soul'

Larian CEO Swen Vincke says there were only two other RPG series he was interested in working on if he couldn't get Baldur's Gate: Fallout and Ultima

It's hard to overstate how big Baldur's Gate 3 is. It's a massive sales hit, it claimed all the awards, and it turned Larian, already a well-respected studio thanks to its outstanding Divinity: Original Sin games, into RPG royalty. I think it's fair to say that nobody could have predicted this, but in the latest issue of Edge (via GamesRadar), Larian CEO Swen Vincke said he had big ambitions for the studio, and that there were only three games he felt could make it happen.

Baldur's Gate 3 studio CEO says that if he couldn't make a D&D game, Fallout and Ultima were the only other RPG licenses he would have considered instead : "There was not a lot to choose from"

It's hard to imagine any other studio delivering Baldur's Gate 3, but Larian CEO Swen Vincke says the Wizards of the Coast property was one of just three household RPG names he was angling to work on.
