Original Resident Evil Games Are Back (& On A New Platform For The First Time)

The franchise has never been more popular but fortunately for those fans who appreciate the historic value of the series,they can finally see where the saga began without needing to purchase a PlayStation One. The original trilogy may largely be seen as synonymous with Sony's first console but the survival horror games were ported to plenty of other devices in the months following the original release. The PC version was famous for including plenty of uncensored content but that version has been lost to time, limited to physical copies that are tough to find.

Fortunately, Good Old Games has come to the rescue as it surprised fans by dropping into its catalog, making this the first time the original version can be purchased through a digital platform. Better yet, GOG also has plans to bring both and to the store, meaning those looking for nostalgia will soon have access to the entire trilogy without all the glitz and glam of the recent remakes. is already available to purchase for $9,99 while the other two games will likely launch in the near future.

A Resident Evil fan is working on a first-person remake of the original game, with some parts of the Spencer Mansion now playable for all.

Those who pick up on GOG can expect to play through the iteration of the game that first landed on PC in 1996 albeit with some slight adjustments to make it more palatable for today's standards. It's fully compatible with Windows 10 and 11, boasts new rendering options, improved cutscene timing, updated game video player, and even issue-free exiting and task switching. In terms of content, nothing's been changed or tweaked; the only improvements focus on making it run efficiently on modern hardware.

While the first game has been available on digital storefronts for quite some time, the version in question is the 2015 remaster of the GameCube remake which dropped in 2002. In a purely mechanic sense, it's a stronger game but it does lose some of the campy cheese that made so popular.
