One Helldivers 2 Detail Shows It’s Not Actually The Genre You Thought It Was

Since its release in early February, has taken the world by storm thanks to its one-of-a-kind premise and endlessly fun gameplay. No co-op game in history has ever encouraged teamwork on such a grand scale, pushing its players to work together to achieve the ultimate goal. In a world where many games are incomplete and released in poor condition, is saving modern gaming by constantly giving its player base reasons to come back.

On the surface, is a cooperative third-person shooter with no end in sight. The goal of the game is to drop onto different planets and spread Managed Democracy by bringing the fight to the Automatons and Terminids. The game is a constant, never-ending battle for glory and freedom on Super Earth. However, several important details in resemble those of a horror game more than anything else.

Upon completing the tutorial, otherwise known as Helldiver training, players are inserted into a cryopod and told they'll be removed when needed. Cryopods are rather common in the realm of science fiction, letting characters live beyond their normal life-span, or in the case of, letting soldiers be stored in battle-ready form until they're needed. It would be all well and good if Helldivers were awakened from these cryopods with plenty of time to prepare for battle, but that couldn't be further from the case.

The majority of Helldivers awaken from cryopods and are thrown straight into the thick of the action, landing in the middle of a chaotic war zone taking the place of someone who just died a gruesome death. It's anything but comforting to awaken to the sound of gunfire and learn that the soldier directly preceding the player was torn to shreds by Automatons or Terminids. There is no time to rest or relax; the only thing that matters is spreading Managed Democracy, despite only coming to consciousness seconds prior.
