Nintendo Will Share Plans for the Next Fiscal Year, Including Hopefully Switch 2, in May

Nintendo recently shared their earnings for the third quarter of their 2024 fiscal year (which runs from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024) and, as we reported, it was a good three months for the company with the Switch inching closer to edging out the PS2 as the best-selling console ever. Overall, the first three quarters of FY2024 have set a record for the company, with them bringing in ¥408 billion (or about $2.8 billion). But what about what comes next?

Rumors have been running rampant that Nintendo’s successor to the Switch will arrive sometime this year, and just the cadence of their publishing seems to indicate that’s the case, but if you were hoping for any news during this earnings briefing… no dice. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa kept his lips sealed about what might be coming down the pipeline.

That said, Furukawa did provide a hint about when we might learn more. While Furukawa said the Switch will continue to be the company’s “main business” as we head into 2024, he said Nintendo’s plan for the next fiscal year will be shared as part of their next Q4 2024 earnings briefing. Again, FY2024 wraps up on March 31 and, typically, Nintendo has reported their Q4 earnings in May. So, one way or another, it seems like we’ll probably have some sort of confirmation about the Switch 2 by then.

As for what to actually expect from that Q4 earnings briefing, I suspect we’re not going to get a big Switch 2 reveal before then. What we likely will get during the earnings briefing is an official confirmation that new hardware is coming in 2024 and perhaps a few more details, with a full reveal to come sometime during the summer. Of course, that’s just my own speculation based on years of covering Nintendo. Perhaps the company will surprise me.
