Nintendo Switch 2 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM Could Deliver Better Texture Quality Than Xbox Series S

The 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM the Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to feature could deliver better texture quality than the Xbox Series S, and address many of the visual quality issues of the current Nintendo consoles.

The tech experts at Digital Foundry analyzed the latest round of Nintendo Switch 2 leaks, focusing on the 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM the new console is said to feature. This would a massive upgrade over the RAM of the original Switch, which has been proven over and over how much of a bottleneck it was for the vast majority of titles. Even if the console's RAM will not run at full speed, it should have more than enough bandwidth for the processor, so multiplatform games are likely not going to compromise too much, considering the 10 GB RAM of the Xbox Series S. The 12 GB RAM will also allow the system to upscale to "reasonable" resolutions using NVIDIA DLSS, which has an intense memory cost, as textures need to be at the resolution of the output resolution to achieve the best results and thus require more memory. This would address the low image quality the current console delivers in docked mode in certain titles, mostly multiplatform games.

Equipped with 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, the Nintendo Switch 2 could potentially deliver better texture quality than the Xbox Series S, although the new Nintendo system is unlikely to match the performance of the Microsoft's console. Using DOOM Eternal as an example, the Xbox Series S has the processing power to handle the light ray tracing the game features, but not without some heavy trade offs in terms of texture quality, due to its RAM.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has yet to be officially announced. We will keep you updated on the system as soon as more come in on it, so stay tuned for all the latest news.
