Nintendo Confirms When It Will Reveal Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has revealed that fans can expect an announcement about the upcoming Switch successor, or Switch 2 as it has come to be known, sometime before the end of the current fiscal year. Rumors about the next iteration of the Nintendo Switch have been swirling for the past couple of years, which is understandable considering that the company’s unique hybrid console originally launched in 2017. Even upon its release, the Switch was considered to be one generation behind the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and many gamers have been waiting for Nintendo to release hardware that could compete graphically and technically with ninth-generation consoles.

Increasingly in recent months, a number of Switch 2 leaks have begun cropping up online, and a Japanese retailer even prematurely listed the rumored console on its website in January 2024. According to the leaks, the updated Switch console is expected to be backward compatible with Switch 1 game cartridges and current Joy-Con and Pro controllers. The Switch 2 Joy-Con, for their part, are rumored to be bigger than the current iteration, and each will feature a new button and attach to the console via a magnet rather than slotting in. Perhaps most notably, the Switch 2 leaks maintain that the new console will feature a larger screen that displays up to 1080p.

On May 6, Nintendo President Furukawa confirmed that an announcement about the upcoming Switch successor will be made before the end of this current fiscal year. Nintendo’s fiscal year concludes on March 31, 2025, so nearly a year from now, which may not be that encouraging for eager gamers. In order to quell the anticipation that this confirmation will inevitably cause, Furukawa warned fans that there will be no mention of the Switch successor during the upcoming June Nintendo Direct presentation.
