May 2 Will Be a Big Day for The Finals

Embark Studios' free-to-play shooter The Finals is gearing up for the launch of a long-awaited game mode on May 2. The studio has been teasing this content addition for The Finals since the absence of last week's update, stating that it was working on delivering «Something very cool.»

Since its launch in December 2023, The Finals has offered players a variety of game modes catering to different preferences. From the low stakes, casual-oriented experience of Quick Cash to the heated competition of Ranked Tournament, the game has strived to provide a well-rounded experience for players of all skill levels. Embark has also provided weekly updates for The Finals, and launched Season 2 in March 2024. A countdown for the reveal of the upcoming game mode started over the weekend, and the clock has finally run out.

After a week's worth of speculation, Embark has released the trailer for a brand-new game mode for TheFinals, dubbed Terminal Attack. Initially teased by Embark under the name Attack and Defend, the new game mode draws clear inspiration from the classic Search and Destroy mode from Call of Duty. Terminal Attack dials up the competitive spirit of The Finals to 11, featuring a 5v5 format played over best-of-seven rounds.

The main objective revolves around Attackers planting a Decryption Key on a designated terminal while the Defenders are tasked to protect it. However, what truly sets Terminal Attack apart is its unforgiving nature, according to the phrase «No healing. No revives. One life.» that flashes in the beginning of the trailer, essentially confirming a permadeath mechanic for the mode. High stakes are a given, then, but Terminal Attack differs from Search and Destroy in one crucial aspect: the destructibility of The Finals' environments, including floors. This makes fortification of the terminal rather tricky, and the trailer showcases this destructive potential in action as well.
