iOS versions of Resident Evil 4, 7 and Village now need an online connection at startup

The iOS versions of Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 remake now require an online connection at startup.

As reported on the iOS Gaming Reddit page (and spotted by Eurogamer), all three apps have received updates adding the new requirement.

All three apps have update notes reading: “Due to changes to the startup process, an internet connection is now required when starting this app.”

Although no reason has been given for Capcom as to why the games now need to connect online when they’re started up, some of the Reddit page’s users believe it may be a DRM check to avoid piracy.

The main issue with this is that the update essentially renders the game unplayable for anyone whose device can’t get a connection when they start playing the game.

While it initially seems that anyone with a phone should usually have access to a data connection – especially given that the Resident Evil ports only work on some of the most recent models of iPhone – there are some places (such as the basement of a venue, a flight, an underground train or a remote location) where they may temporarily have no signal or Wi-Fi access.

The issue is likely worse for iPad users, many of whom can only connect their devices online when there’s a Wi-Fi connection. If they’re travelling and don’t have access to Wi-Fi, they will now be unable to launch these games.

Some players on the Reddit page are now attempting to find out whether they can get refunds for the game, especially given that by iOS store game standards they’re on the higher end of pricing.

All three games are free to download so players can test a brief section and make sure they work on their device. It then costs $20 each to buy Resident Evil 7 and Village, and $60 to unlock Resident Evil 4. All three also have extra $20 DLC unlocks.
