Most Favors you can buy from vendors during a run will reset upon your death before you begin a new playthrough. The powers or abilities applied to Odin from lingering boons are usually powerful tools that let you strongly start new runs.
The tools you normally start with during a run are completely randomized, which can make it difficult to form reliable strategies. Take advantage of Permanent Favors to give Odin a foundation to work with before leaving camp for another attempt.
The first Permanent Favor you can collect is called Summoned Courage from the quest you can acquire early in. In an icy Kaldstat cavern, Odin must interact with a sword to trigger a boss fight against Skjaldmaer, a fierce headless warrior.
