How BG3's New Toolkit Works & Everything Else You Need To Know About Mod Updates

Patch 7 has brought a major new option for modding to the table, and it could change what the future of the game looks like. As developer Larian Studios prepares to eventually step away from the ongoing work on, putting more tools into the hands of the community helps ensure that the game will be able to live on for much longer. The new toolkit will still have some major restrictions, but it makes changing some aspects of the game much easier than before.

The widespread popularity of quickly attracted a modding community that's been full steam ahead since the game's launch, and modders have already accomplished a lot even without an official toolkit. While it isn't as open to transformative overhauls as a game like is, there's been plenty of room to change character appearances, unlock certain restrictions in progression, add in missing from, and more. With the long-awaited release of Patch 7, there should be plenty more to come.

Unlike other updates to, the is available as a separate application to download for free on Steam, as noted in the patch notes available on the official website. To ensure that it shows up in their library, modders may have to enable the toolkit DLC in the properties menu on Steam and ensure that Tools are selected to appear in the library view. Right now, the toolkit is only available for PC users, but Larian has plans to bring it to Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox.
