Helldivers 2 is Achieving Something Incredibly Rare

Weeks after its release, Helldivers 2 has achieved the rare honor of seeing its sales continue to increase over time. The co-op action game set in a sci-fi universe of alien bugs and robots has taken the industry by storm and continues to grow its fan base. It's still early in the year, but Helldivers 2 has the potential to be one of the best games of 2024, and with ongoing support from developer Arrowhead Games, could become even bigger and better.

Last week, leaks revealed a major feature coming to Helldivers 2 in the form of mech suits, demonstrating that the dev team is committed to improving an already impressive title. All of this work is paying off as Arrowhead's game shows no signs of losing momentum after the initial excitement of its launch. If anything, the Helldivers sequel appears to be picking up steam.

On Twitter, gaming industry veteran and analyst Mat Piscatella has noted that Helldivers 2 sales are increasing over time. Exhibiting what he refers to as an «inverse decay curve,» the title is seeing sales rise week after week, an accomplishment that is incredibly rare in the industry. Last week, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt confirmed that Helldivers 2 sales are still going strong, but fans are now getting a better idea of just how strong.

As Piscatella explains, new games generally see their biggest sales right after launch and then experience a decline over time. This makes intuitive sense, as excited players will usually rush to buy a new release, generating the biggest spike in sales. After that, sales begin to drop. Helldivers 2, however, seems to be growing in popularity, drawing in large numbers of gamers who may not have been interested at launch but are now picking it up after hearing about it from others.
