Game of Thrones Creators Break Silence On Abandoned Star Wars Project

The creators of Game of Thrones have finally broken their silence on their abandoned Star Wars project, and it seems they won’t be making their way to the galaxy far, far away anytime soon.

David Benioff and DB Weiss took the world by storm with the HBO series Game of Thrones. It is one of the highest-rated series of all time and won several accolades. After the massive success of the show, Lucasfilm tapped the creators to create a trilogy of films in the Star Wars universe. However, in 2019, they pulled out of the franchise and started their journey with Netflix. A lot has been said about their exit and the reasons behind it. However, the duo recently opened up about the abandoned projects and quashed all the rumors about their exit.

Speaking in an interview with Inside Total Film podcast and GameRadar+, Benioff and Weiss revealed that they wanted to start something fresh and with Star Wars being “well established,” it didn’t give them the freedom to tackle the projects like they would have wanted to. Benioff said, "I think when you've got a franchise that's already so well established, likeStar Wars or James Bond or so forth, I think there's less independence when you come in to try to tell a story that you want to tell and so I think what Dan [Weiss] and I have learned is that it's more fun for us to start something afresh.

The comments made by the duo came almost three months after they noted how creative differences with Lucasfilm led to the cancellation of the trilogy of films. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the duo suggested that they wanted to make The Last Jedi and got really annoyed when Rian Johnson’s 2017 film was titled The Last Jedi. Johnson’s movie turned out to be successful at the box office, and it was believed that fans would finally be getting the trilogy they deserved. However, the trilogy never happened.
