Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Sequel May Be Developed With Unreal Engine 5

The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth team may switch from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 for the third and final entry in the remake project, and the decision will depend on some factors.

Speaking with Japanese publication CG World, as translated on X by Genki, director Naoki Hamaguchi said that the development team is considering switching to Unreal Engine 5 for the next game but believes what players want most for them is to deliver the game in good shape as soon as possible. As such, the decision will be made based on whether it will be faster to switch engines or whether it is best to develop the game at once using UE4 as in the previous games. The first year of work will be extremely important, as it will be a prototyping period that will determine the direction of the game. The same was done with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, as its first year of development was conducted in parallel with the development of Intergrade, a decision that definitely paid off, given the game's high quality.

Very little is currently known about the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's sequel that will conclude the story. Earlier this month, we heard that it will include the Queen's Blood card mini-game in a revamped form, but that is the only thing that has been confirmed for what is likely going to become one of the most anticipated JRPGs of the coming years.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on PlayStation 5 worldwide. You can learn more about it in our review.
