FF7 Rebirth Sets Up A Huge Change To A Classic Location & One Character Benefits The Most

makes a fair few changes to the story of the original, and based on hints dropped throughout the story, there's one major location from the first game that's definitely going to get a very different treatment in the conclusion of the new trilogy. Making alterations to a classic title can come with a lot of pitfalls, and plays it safe in some key areas to avoid major mistakes. In some categories, however, the game makes significant overhauls that seem likely to precipitate even bigger changes down the line.

If there's any consistent aspect of how changes locations, it's the fact that they always tend to end up bigger, a design prerogative that makes sense considering the enhanced scope of the remake trilogy. This can come with its own issues, like the changes to Corel Prison in that ignore a lot of what made the original game's approach effective, but it also opens up new opportunities for storytelling. This might be most important for the locations that are yet to come in the trilogy's conclusion, as the success of the whole endeavor arguably rides on its final outing.

Yuffie's homeland of Wutai doesn't actually make it into, but based on all of references to it throughout the story, it's safe to say that Wutai's inclusion in the next game will be completely different from how it appeared in the past. In the original, Wutai is essentially a village location that the party can or cannot choose to visit, although doing so has the massive benefit of opening up the powerful materia Ultima for acquisition. Yuffie herself doesn't have to be recruited, so it's possible to finish the game with almost no awareness of Wutai's existence.

did make some minor references to a combative history between Wutai and Shinra, but it's a minor note that isn't reflected in the story at large.
