After players beat with any ending, the main menu will present the opportunity to restart the playthrough with the same character, retaining most items and forms of progression. As with most games that have a new game plus system, however, not everything carries over, and players may want to carefully consider completing any unfinished content in the base game before starting a new playthrough. Especially in the case of, the game's open-world nature and limited fast travel systems could complicate starting a new game plus playthrough.

As in the original, and many other RPGs like, allows players to start over after beating the game, giving them the opportunity to find content they might have missed the first time around. Especially in 's case, the game's single-save nature and general lack of hand-holding when it comes to quests means that players could easily have failed certain quests, and can take a second chance to do them correctly. Available after beating the final boss of , a repeat playthrough can help find many of the game's more obscure secrets.

When starting new game plus in, it's important to consider exactly what carries over from the original run through the game. As is explained in a tutorial popup for starting new game plus, players retain their character levels and Vocation ranks for the Arisen and the Main Pawn, as well as gold, Rift Crystals, unlocked skills, and most items. Unmentioned by the game, players also retain their map progress — any areas of the map that were uncovered in the original playthrough will remain visible in new game plus.

Although most items and unlocked skills do carry over, players won't be able to access them until they get past the introduction and are able to access their storage and Vocation menus at the Borderwatch Outpost inn — items have to be taken out of storage, and skills have to be reassigned before they can be used in new game plus.
