Deutsche Telekom Shows Off Smartphone Concept At MWC 2024 That Relies Solely On AI, Runs Absolutely Zero Apps

A smartphone operating system’s popularity stems from its large app ecosystem, providing a massive repository of programs that can run on mobile devices seamlessly, but suppose all of that work was done by AI instead of applications that had to be downloaded through a dedicated store? Deutsche Telekom believes that in the future, smartphones will rely on artificial intelligence instead of apps for task completion and has collaborated with T-Mobile and Qualcomm to showcase a concept smartphone that runs just AI.

During the presentation, Deutsche Telekom Tim Hoettges CEO appeared confident in this claim that 10 years from now, nobody will be using apps anymore, hinting that AI will handle all of this work. The concept smartphone shown off is said to have an app-free user interface, and though it is not ready for prime time, there are several functions that it can accomplish. For instance, it can respond to prompts, recommend travel destinations, or purchase a product for the smartphone owner.

Other tasks include sending pictures of videos to contacts, though these are features that can already be taken care of by apps in a few single steps. Assuming that all of this functionality will be completed in the form of prompts through voice commands, the AI models need to be trained on how to send content to other recipients accurately or how to provide search results. Since there are several regions where the English language is spoken with varying accents, and in some areas, it is not spoken fluently at all, how will those Large Language Models tackle this obstacle?
