Bungie is investigating an issue that’s removed a ‘high number’ of Destiny 2 usernames

Bungie has acknowledged an issue which has seen widespread username changes on Destiny 2.

Following a recent update, players have started reporting that their Bungie Names have been reset to generic ones with ‘Guardian’ followed by four random numbers.

An in-game message informs them that their Bungie Name has been changed, either because they are logging in for the first time or they opted to change it.

In a series of posts on X, Bungie has now confirmed that the issue has affected a “high number” of players and is currently being investigated.

“We are tracking an issue where a high number of account names have been changed by our Bungie name moderation tool,” the studio wrote on Wednesday

“We are actively investigating and expect to have more information tomorrow, including details on an additional name change token for all players.”

A new update posted today said the studio had found the issue, have prevented it from continuing to happen and now plan to issue free tokens to let players change their username back.

“We have identified the issue that was forcing a high number of Bungie name changes,” it wrote. “We have applied a server-side change to prevent the issue from impacting accounts moving forward.

“We are continuing to investigate options to address player accounts that were impacted. This will take some time as our path forward will be dependent on fixing the underlying issue.

“As noted yesterday, we are still planning to distribute name change tokens to all players at a later date to assist. As we have more information, we’ll be sure to share it with you.”

It’s not yet clear if players will be able to change their username back to their previous one, or whether all changed usernames will be up for grabs again, potentially leading to players ‘stealing’ other names and impersonating the users who previously had them.

Last month Bungie announced that it was laying off 220 staff (roughly 17% of the studio), with a further 155 staff being “integrated” into Sony
