Borderlands boss teases what’s next: ‘I’m confident our fans will be very, very happy’

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has seemingly teased the next Borderlands game, stating that the studio is “working on big things” and that an announcement could come soon.

Publisher 2K confirmed that the next Borderlands game is in active development at Gearbox earlier this year, after it announced that it had acquired Gearbox Entertainment from Embracer Group for $460 million.

Speaking to Games Radar, Pitchford suggested that fans won’t have to wait long for more information about it.

“I haven’t been perfect at hiding the fact that we’re working on many things, and that we’re working on big things,” the co-founder said.

“I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it.”

Pitchford teased that an announcement about the next Borderlands movie could come “before the end of the year. We’ll see. Maybe sooner.”

He also added, “I have the biggest and best team that I’ve ever had working on what we know is exactly what our fans want from us—so I’m very, very thrilled. I can’t wait to talk about it! I wish I could just gush right now because we’ve got so much to say!”

The most recent mainline series entry, 2019’s Borderlands 3, is 2K’s fastest-selling title and has sold over 19 million copies.

2012’s Borderlands 2 is 2K’s top-selling game since the label’s inception seven years earlier, with over 28 million copies sold.

In 2022, the fantasy-themed Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was also released. In the same Games Radar interview, Pitchford hinted that fans could see more from the D&D-inspired sub-series in the future.

“We had a bigger result with the first Wonderlands game than we did with the first Borderlands game, so that’s something we can build on,” he said.

“I love fantasy. That’s why we did the original Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2, because I love fantasy so much. So many of us at Gearbox love fantasy,
