Astro Bot is 2024’s highest-rated standalone game so far, according to Metacritic

Astro Bot is the highest-rated standalone game of 2024 so far, according to Metacritic.

At the time of writing,  the game currently holds a Metacritic score of 94, based on 100 critic reviews. This makes Astro Bot the year’s highest-rated standalone game.

It doesn’t better Elden Ring‘s DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, however, which currently holds a 95 score.

Below Astro Bot, fellow PlayStation 5 exclusive Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth holds a score of 92 on the aggregation platform, followed by Animal Well at 91 and Balatro at 90.

VGC’s review of Astro Bot called it “The best 3D platformer of the decade.”

“Relentlessly joyous, with a world-beating soundtrack to match, Astro Bot is a truly wonderful game and the best platformer in a decade,” we wrote.

“While it never coasts on nostalgia alone, the effort Team Asobi has made to treat PlayStation characters (and a few old friends) with respect and love is wonderful. Leave it to Team Asobi to finally get Bloodborne characters in a native PS5 game.”

The PS5 platformer will be released this week, on Friday, September 6, after more than three years of development.

Astro Bot’s DLC plan will include new challenge levels and a speedrun mode, the developer confirmed to VGC.

VGC recently got the chance to visit the developers behind Astro Bot, Team Asobi, for an inside look at the development of the game, and the history of the franchise.
