Apple Is Not Working On Its Own Chatbot, Claims New Report, Meaning That It Will Not Compete Against OpenAI And ChatGPT

OpenAI’s ChatGPT caught trillion-dollar entities like Apple off-guard, with earlier reports stating that the company was working on its own chatbot dubbed ‘Apple GPT.’ It was assumed that the technology giant would deliver a preview of this technology at its upcoming WWDC 2024 keynote and later integrate it when iOS 18 officially launched later this year. Unfortunately, plans have changed, and according to the latest information, Apple is not working on a chatbot and will rely on other means to bring generative AI to the table.

OpenAI was previously said to have partnered with Apple to bring ChatGPT to various devices

It would be unnecessary for Apple to invest billions just to create a chatbot that may be potentially inferior to ChatGPT. Instead, the Cupertino firm was previously reported to have made a move that would benefit both it and OpenAI; a partnership. Both Apple and the technology startup have apparently joined hands and struck a deal in which ChatGPT-like features would arrive to both Siri and iOS 18. In the latest ‘Power On’ newsletter from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the current-generation chatbot is simply not up to the mark.

Apple was also said to be engaged with Google on bringing Gemini to iPhones as part of a licensing agreement, but it looks like OpenAI was given priority since it possesses the superior product. Also, after witnessing the disaster that was AI Overviews, Apple is probably glad it did not extend its hand out to Google. The report does not dive in on what partnering with OpenAI will materialize, but we may find out during the WWDC 2024 keynote, so stay tuned.
