AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU Memory Overclocking Now Supported In Latest Drivers, +15% Performance Uplift

AMD has removed the memory OC limits from its Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU in the latest driver release, allowing for some impressive performance uplifts.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE Comes Close To 7900 XT With Memory Tuning As Overclocking Limits Removed From Latest GPU Drivers

AMD's latest Adrenalin 24.3.1 driver changelog didn't explicitly mention the removal of the memory overclocking limits for the Radeon RX 7900GRE GPU but TechPowerUP was quick to spot the new development. It seems like AMD has implemented a clock limit override in its latest WHQL driver, allowing the Radeon RX 7900 GRE to operate at much faster clock speeds by manually tuning the overclocking slider limit through AMD's software.

So, we are all aware that the "Golden Rabbit Edition" SKUs were intended to be somewhat of a "culture-inspired" release, and AMD did not intend to disrupt its current market offerings with the release. To ensure this, Team Red implemented a limitation with memory overclocking on the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which was done to position the GPU similarly to the company's other counterpart offerings.

While this worked out to a certain extent, AMD has now decided to revert to their decision, with the new driver update categorizing it as "the maximum memory tuning limit may be incorrectly reported on AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics products." which is a pretty vague statement in itself.

Fortunately, TechPowerUP ran some benchmarks and manually tuned the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU in their latest review, and as expected, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE managed to showcase decent performance uplifts. You can see that an overclock of 2614 MHz on the memory alone is yielding a +15% performance uplift.

As highlighted by TechPowerUP themselves, the overclocked limits are subjective to the memory chips onboard; hence, they were able to obtain 2604 MHz speeds with their 20 Gbps chips;
